National Weather Service Lake Charles LA

...New SHORT TERM, LONG TERM, MARINE, FIRE WEATHER...

.KEY MESSAGES...

- Freezing rain and ice accumulation is expected to begin early this
evening as temperatures drop below freezing. The majority of
freezing rain will occur between midnight and 9 AM Sunday Freezing
rain will come to an end by Sunday evening.

- Dangerously cold temperatures and wind chills will occur each
night from tonight through Tuesday night.

- Another cold front will push through the region Friday with another
arctic airmass keeping temperatures well below normal through
  next weekend.

&&

.SHORT TERM...
(Tonight through Monday night)
Issued at 1211 PM CST Sat Jan 24 2026

The initial surge of cold air is pushing through the
region at this hour with temperatures ranging from the mid 50s
across lower acadiana to just above freezing across central
Louisiana. Freezing rain is ongoing across northern Louisiana and
has been reported by automated observing stations as far south as
Jasper, TX as of noon. South of the freezing line, widespread liquid
precipitation, heavy at times, will continue to move across the
region early this afternoon. While the focus has been on the
freezing rain and icing threat, there is a low end risk of flash
flooding with some of the higher rainfall rate producing storms this
afternoon and WPC has highlighted the area in a marginal risk of
excessive rainfall this afternoon. Rain will transition over to
freezing rain by late afternoon as temperatures begin to fall below
freezing from north to south. Guidance has not changed appreciably
overnight regarding forecast ice accumulation totals with between a
quarter and a half inch expected across central Louisiana and
interior parts of Southeast Texas and a tenth of an inch or less
along and north of the I-10 corridor. Little to no ice accumulation
is expected south of the I-10 corridor to the coast.

Temperatures will fall below freezing quickly around or shortly
after sunset this evening posing a black ice risk due to the
freezing over of any puddles or standing water from the days liquid
rainfall. This is independent of any ice accumulation due to
freezing rain. A cold weather advisory remains in effect from 6 PM
this evening through Noon Sunday as gusty northerly winds will yield
apparent temperatures in the mid teens to lower 20s.

Temperatures will struggle to get above freezing roughly north of
the Hwy 190 corridor Sunday allowing for continued ice accumulation
and limiting the time that any ice that has formed to melt. The
freezing rain threat will come to an end early Sunday evening as the
remainder of the precipitation finally pushes off to the east.
However, any ice that has developed will remain in place overnight
as temps will fall quickly below freezing near sunset. Lows will
reach the upper teens to lower 20s expected and apparent
temperatures in the single digits. Dry, but frigid conditions are
expected again Monday with central Louisiana likely remaining below
freezing the entire day while areas along and south of the I-10
corridor will only rise above freezing for a couple of hours. Any
ice that develops today through tomorrow will struggle to melt
Monday. An extreme cold warning remains in effect for Sunday night
into Monday morning for apparent temperatures in the single digits
and this warning has been extended into Monday night/Tuesday morning
as similar apparent temperatures are expected. These temperatures
will be life threatening to any animals exposed to them with
improper clothing.

.LONG TERM...
(Tuesday through next Friday)
Issued at 1211 PM CST Sat Jan 24 2026

Temperatures will finally rise appreciably above
freezing Tuesday afternoon although highs will still only top out in
the 40s. This will give any lingering ice an opportunity to melt
off. Freezing temperatures are expected each night through the end
of the week with highs warming into the upper 40s to lower 50s
Wednesday and Thursday. Another, dry frontal boundary will push
through the region late Thursday with another arctic airmass
filtering into the area behind it keeping temperatures well below
normal through next weekend. Some guidance has been depicting the
chance for another round of winter precipitation behind this front
Friday into Saturday, but confidence in this is very low at this
time range.

ARA and LFT. After sunrise Sunday winds will be from the north
with gusts up to 20 knots.

&&

.MARINE...
Issued at 1211 PM CST Sat Jan 24 2026

wake of a frontal passage which will increase seas to 4-7 feet. A
few gusts may be near gale force. Winds and seas will remain

Thursday. Offshore winds and seas will increase again Thursday night
