Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Nashville TN
1159 AM CST Sat Jan 24 2026

...New SHORT TERM, LONG TERM...

.KEY MESSAGES...
Updated at 1144 AM CST Sat Jan 24 2026

- Powerful winter storm with snow, sleet, and freezing rain will
bring major travel impacts through the weekend. Damaging ice
totals are most likely in southwest Middle Tennessee, but
everyone should prepare for possible power outages.

- Extreme cold next week with life threatening conditions for
those who lose heat sources during the winter storm. Periods of
dangerous cold persist throughout next week.

.SHORT TERM...
(Rest of today through Sunday)
Issued at 1144 AM CST Sat Jan 24 2026

The well-advertised winter storm is ongoing across Middle
Tennessee this morning. As moistening in the lower levels has
increased, snowfall rates have ticked up. So far, up to an inch of
snow has been reported over southern Middle TN. The "warm nose"
of air just above freezing has moved up a few hours faster than
forecast, resulting in a faster transition to sleet. Looking at
profiles over Nashville metro, a transition to sleet is imminent.
So now we watch and wait.

As the warm air continues its push north into our area through
this evening, the frozen/liquid line looks to be oriented from a
line stretching from Wayne County up through Nashville metro and
into the Pickett County area. Southeast of this line, precip will
be falling as rain with warmer surface temperatures between 35-40
degrees. On the other side of the line, profiles favor an extended
period of freezing rain. It will be during this time that
significant ice accumulation will be likely, especially on
elevated surfaces like trees and powerlines. Latest probabilities
for a half-inch of ice accumulation range from 80% in our
southwest to 50-70% from Nashville metro and points northeast.

By late Sunday afternoon, the surface low will shift off to the
northeast, taking the bulk of the precipitation with it. With
another shot of brutally cold air filtering in, this will collide
with lingering moisture, transitioning precipitation back to snow.
Depending on how much moisture is left, it`s feasible another
inch or so of snow falls, mostly for areas north of I-40.
Precipitation fully wraps up and comes to an end Sunday evening,
but that is nowhere near the end of the impacts from this storm.
Brutally cold air will settle into Middle TN following the exit of
this system with temperatures falling into the teens to single
digits by Monday night. This is life-threatening cold for those
who may be without a heat source. Once this event wraps up, we
will be focusing our attention on cold headlines that will prolong
impacts from this storm.

.LONG TERM...
(Sunday Night through next Saturday)
Issued at 1144 AM CST Sat Jan 24 2026

Temperatures will remain well below-average for the rest of this
week. We`ll have several reinforcing shots of cold air that keep
temps largely below freezing the rest of the week, making for a
difficult week ahead with lingering impacts from the winter storm.
Again, for those that lose power, this will be a critical time
with multiple nights of temperatures in the teens. Please, check
on your people, make sure they`re safe and have warm shelter.
Despite the below freezing temperatures, we`ll at least get to see
the sunshine, and that will help melt some ice off. Though cold,
the forecast will be dry through at least Saturday.
